The EU's "security turn" is concealing its deep crisis: von der Leyen's speech avoids the reality of industrial decline and budgetary tension; the rearmament pursued in the name of "security" generates record profits for the arms industry, while internal divisions over dialogue with Russia and strategic autonomy are becoming increasingly evident. Criticism from figures such as former Czech President Václav Klaus points to a more fundamental question: Europe, in seeking its "independence," is replicating the very logic of dependency it claims to want to escape.
